I just came across The Card Artists. From their website:
Thecardartists.com brings together artists, poets and card buyers together in one e-commerce social networking, artist community! Thecardartists is a new greeting card community built around the artist, the poet, and the people who buy greeting cards.
TCA community provides our artists with an incredible opportunity to market their art. Create password protected e-commerce stores, galleries, groups, ecard-groups or blog.
Although they promise more profit to artists and poets, the cards on the site seem high-priced to me (around $3.45) compared to other online greeting card shops. I’m also not impressed by the typos and grammatical errors — and I’m talking about the writing on the site itself, not by the users.
The idea behind the site is intriguing but the amateur presentation turned me off. If this company plans to present itself as a professional entity, it definitely needs to hire a copywriter. An excerpt from their What’s New page:
You got video blogs, instant messaging, you can invite your friends, start a private gallery, create groups, create a profile. You have your own unique url that you can edit! Instead of your username you can use your store name! You can now send free e-cards! That’s just a few of the things you can now do.
Customers can now add poems or prose to their cards! Simply by telling us the sku# of poem to apply to each card. Now poets, or for that matter anyone, can post their orginal poetry and prose in any langauge. Any poem can be chosen with any card! Making each card even more unique!

This was such a plain-looking site when I came across it that at first I thought it was a link farm; it seems to be part of http://www.worldwidefreelance.com/. Not much info here yet, but with a URL like Greetingcardmarkets.com, I’m hoping that Worldwidefreelance.com is planning to add more resources (and isn’t just sitting on the URL to funnel traffic into the main site).

You can find Avanti Press’s submission guidelines on their website by clicking on the “Contact Us” button and then “Submission.” They have separate guidelines for photos and for writing. At present, they seem more interested in photo submissions than verse submissions.

Several online photo services offer custom greeting card options. Kodakgallery.com, for example, lets you put uploaded photos on greeting cards and other products. You can find pricing information at their website; there seems to be a wide range of card types. A classic fold card costs $2.49 for 1-10 (cheaper for larger quantities). Notecards cost $1.49.
Kodakgallery.com appears to feature a few card designers but doesn’t allow users to sell their own cards, so this service would probably only suit those wanting to self-publish a few of their own cards for private use or selling on their own.

After California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage, Hallmark has launched a card line for same-sex couples. Interesting that Hallmark’s major competitor, American Greetings Corp., says it has no plans to do the same, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.

Hallmark started offering “coming out” cards last year.
