Season 5, Episodes 103: Darkness Ascending

Pretty creepy opening nightmare. At least I hope it was a nightmare. If it wasn’t, then it means that Lyta is starting to cross over into the dark side. But no, it WAS a nightmare. Right? Don’t tell me.

Lise makes a surprise return to B5. I -was- wondering what was going on with her. Turns out that he wasn’t returning her calls. And then Lise finds booze in his apartment, and isn’t happy about it.

Uh oh. Somehow I don’t think this relationship is going to end well.

“This is my own private act of rebellion,” Garibaldi tells Lisa in explanation of why he’s started drinking again. She challenges him to stay off the drink during her visit and he agrees.

Fortunately (and unfortunately) for Garibaldi, Lise leaves the ship by the end of this episode.

Meanwhile, Delenn and Sheridan also have a fight because Sheridan discovers about Delenn recruiting Lennier to covertly get proof of the Centauri’s involvement in the attacks. Delenn says she did what she did because Sheridan was trying to protect her, and that she didn’t need protecting.

Lennier takes matters into his own hands, however, when Montoya’s White Star (”The Maria”) is called back by Sheridan. He takes off to hunt down proof on his own, following the coded signals which he theorizes will lead back to the base ship.

But he’s running out of air! Good thing he knows how to meditate.

Meanwhile, Lyta offers G’Kar and his people access to telepaths’ DNA if they’ll provide the telepaths with money and ships so they can find a home.

Lyta [to G'kar]: Oh, and you mentioned wondering what my pleasure threshold is. I just recently found out … I don’t have one. Have a very, very nice day, G’Kar.

Heh.

I was REALLY glad that Lyta passes G’Kar’s test, saying that she refused to have the telepaths spy on the various ambassadors.

Lise asks Garibaldi if he’s told the B5 crew, and he says no. What was it that he hasn’t told them? That’s he’s going back to Mars? Maybe he’s having second thoughts.

Meanwhile, Lennier has hitched a ride with one of the Centauri ships.

Delenn refuses to believe that Lennier has dead, though Montoya and Sheridan warn her that he must be running out of air if he hasn’t already.

Londo is told by an obviously TOTALLY lying Centauri guy that Sheridan and his people think that the Centauri are responsible for the attacks.

Lennier makes it back, yay! Delenn has an emotional breakdown in the hallway. At first I thought it was pure joy, but then I realized it must have been mixed feelings because of the proof he brought back with him.

Chills went down my spine when Delenn hugged Londo when he asks her if she’s all right.

Londo: What? What is this for?

Delenn: I had never done that, in all the time that I had been here. And I think that very soon, I will not have another chance.

This episode is called “Darkness Ascending” for a very, very good reason.

The end of Season 5 - the last few episodes, I mean - left me with my eyes wide open.

Wide. Open.

Hmm, I was about four episodes viewing ahead of you then suddenly I am 8 episodes behind.

~”And here I worked up a good mad and now I can’t use it”~ Good line by Sheridan (~ means I think that is close to what he said).

Telepaths. The old Markab planet is still going to waste. Isolated now without a working jump gate. Plenty of living space left by humaniods who seem to live well in 1.0 Earth gravity, 1.0 Earth atmosphere, 1.0 Earth standard living quarters.

Good thing those Centari ships had no proximity sensors, no attach or breach detectors, nor a way of telling that they lost just a little air or a way of scanning for any living survivors of their attack.

Was that disobeying of a direct order Lennier’s betrayal of the Rangers? It sure worked out to the goal all were seeking.
