Season 4, Episode 87: Rising Star

I want to thank you all again for your patience (in my erratic posting schedule) and feedback. One of my favourite comments after my last post was from Alice:

:’(
ooooh I was waiting for you to get to this one…while you were on hiatus I was actually worried you had watched Endgame and lost the will to live :(
Poor Marcus!!!

I am SO with you, Alice!

I can’t believe they really did kill off Marcus. This is SO DEPRESSING! I’m really going to miss him.

And so is Ivanova, clearly. :-( :-(

So she’s been promoted to captain but is leaving B5.

FOR HOW LONG???????? Don’t tell me. She has to come back soon, right? What about that untapped potential of her latent telepathic abilities? That’ll come in handy during the mundane-telepath war, won’t it? Which HAS to be a focus of next season, after all. Don’t tell me.

But seriously, losing both Marcus and Ivanova is a big blow for me. Maybe Marcus is only temporarily dead. Maybe Ivanova will come back much stronger with new hair and makeup and ready to kick some butt.

She HAS to come back.

Don’t tell me.

Bester still cares about his lover, but I have no sympathy for him — he treated Garibaldi and the others so horribly! I hope another Ceti eel wraps around his cerebral cortex.

Poor Garibaldi. And what about Leta? Bester still has a claim on Leta’s remains after she’s dead…what’s going to happen with that? Will he be willing to let her die naturally, or is he going to try helping the process along?

Don’t tell me.

I’m glad that Sheridan was reunited with his dad. We’ve never seen Sheridan’s mom, have we? Can’t blame her for staying away, considering what happened to his dad. Won’t Sheridan’s parents remain a huge liability since everyone’s seen how much he cares about them?

Don’t tell me.s

Meanwhile, Garibaldi seems to at least be content for now. But is he so committed to his love that he’ll spend more time with her than his B5 duties?
Don’t tell me.

I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about the president. Something about her acting and speech delivery really bugged me; I hope she doesn’t become a permanent part of the cast next season.

LOVE the scene where all the rangers soar over Earthdome, the rumble of their passing shaking the walls. Nicely played, Sheridan and Delenn! Loved Delenn’s speech.

I’m so SO glad that G’Kar and Londo are on speaking terms again. I especially love the scene near the end when G’Kar is munching on the rice that was thrown at the wedding.

I really like the fact that we (as viewers) -don’t- see the wedding ceremony itself, but just these two chatting afterward.

A wonderful ending (though somewhat depressing re: Marcus and Ivanova). So complete, in fact, that I can’t help but wonder how they’re going to keep the story moving after this.

I still can’t believe they killed off Marcus.

:-(

And that Ivanova’s left B5.

:-(

Next episode: The Deconstruction Of Falling Stars.

I wasn’t keen on the President’s performance either. I’m thinking that may have been intentional…that we were supposed to be slightly bugged by her, not for any reason to do with subsequent events, but just because she was the one with the power over Sheridan. At that point.

“Funny thing about retiring, you no sooner pick out the places you want to go on vacation than somebody comes at you with another job offer.”

Definitely a punch-the-air moment.

I gotta say, that that scene with Susan and Franklin is one of the scenes in my first watch-through of the series where I just sat and wept.

JMS wrote a short story, published in some magazine or other, which dealt with what happened to Marcus. Do yourself a favor. Don’t ever find it and read it; you don’t want to know the end of that story.

There’s a really long story about why Claudia Christian didn’t sign for Season 5 and that’s why JMS wrote in that bit about Ivanova being given a captaincy. Ivanova shows up eventually in the series finale (because that was filmed already and meant to cap off Season 4 in case the series wasn’t renewed), so there’s some degree of closure to Susan’s story at least.

Ok, wasn’t going to say anything about Claudia, but since Terence already posted the spoiler… for full details see here http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/misc/cc-leave.html
