Season 3, Episode 58: Ship Of Tears

Creepy and disturbing episode!

So ISN’s back, but clearly heavily censored and controlled. Very bad.

I love how hands-on Sheridan has been throughout the series so far. Cool new Starfury!

And Bester’s back! I still don’t trust him, and was glad to hear Ivanova say that she didn’t either, that she was sure that Bester would turn on them as soon as he got what he wanted.

Sheridan asks Ivanova to keep aware of whether Bester is trying to scan them or not. This is the first time Ivanova’s been asked to use her latent telepathic abilities, and I can’t blame her for being nervous.

Turns out that she didn’t need them this episode but now that Bester’s joined them (”Your war is now my war”), it’ll be interesting to see if he discovers her abilities and what happens when he does.

Especially considering how well they get along now…

I still don’t trust Bester despite his heartfelt story about his lost love. Could be something about his contrived manner when he’s speaking, I guess.

Intense scene between Delenn and G’Kar when she confesses that the Minbari knew about the Shadows and still didn’t warn the Narn.

G’Kar: Some must be sacrificed for all to be saved. At first I took that as revelation for the future. Now I see that it is as much about how we got here as about where we are going. I think that one sentence is the greatest burden I have ever known.

Delenn: Someday, when all this is over, perhaps you will find it in your heart to forgive me.

G’Kar: Perhaps. But not today.

The sight of all those telepaths frozen in horror in their sleeper tubes was pretty creepy.

Even more creepy was the knowledge that the Shadow ships intended each of those telepaths to merge with and become the heart of a ship. *shudder*

I -knew- that frozen woman telepath was going to suddenly wake up, but I was still freaked out anyway.

Amazing that Bester could read all that info (about the telepath’s level, that she ran away, etc. etc.) from just the info on that tag.

Creepy alien nightmare in that woman telepath’s mind! Yikes. Who were those alien guys? Are they the real Shadow creatures? But then what about the spider things? Are the spiders just robots or underlings? And I still don’t get how Morden fits into all of that.

Don’t tell me.

The woman-machine creature thing was pretty darned creepy, Aliens-style.

Hey, Bester’s first name is Alfred! Alfred Bester as in the sf author. :-)

So Carolyn’s carrying Bester’s child; that’s kind of scary. Also the fact that the Shadows are after telepaths to be the heart of their ships.

Yay, I’m glad that G’Kar’s finally been let into the secret council.

Garibaldi finds out that the Shadows are afraid of telepaths…that’s intriguing. Looks like Bester might be playing even more of a role in the new alliance than previously thought. And I’m still waiting for Ivanova’s true abilities to show themselves! (don’t tell me)

The Shadows are starting to openly attack, not hiding anymore.

When is the new alliance going to start to really fight back? Don’t tell me.

Next episode: Interludes and Examinations.

I really did a doubletake when I learned Bester’s first name.

“Hey, Bester’s first name is Alfred! Alfred Bester as in the sf author.”

That was 100% deliberate on the part of JMS.

The Shadows are the creepy spider things you’ve seen. No spoiler there, just clarification really. I haven’t seen it recently but I think the episode more or less explains the abducting aliens, but if not it will become clearer I believe.

One of my all time favorite G’Kar lines: “Do not ‘thump’ the book of G’Quan. It is disrespectful.”

I like that we finally find out the reason there are no Narn telepaths, after it has been mentioned since the pilot.

Did you notice that the new War Room has a round table at it’s center? Unlike the long table in the EA rooms on the station.

The B5 novel that tells of the Psi Corps’ birth reveals Bester’s naming to have been a sick joke on the part of the Psi Corps — he was renamed by the Corps as an infant.

The sickness of the joke comes from the way the hero of “The Demolished Man” averts a distinctly Psi-Corps-like future…

No spoilers, but remember this episode because many of the things that happen in it will come back down the road.
